In the event of weather related delays, students will not be allowed on the water if the following occurs:
- Instructors have access to the NOAA Weather Site and are familiar with it.
- Lightning has been reported 30 miles from the point of instruction within 30 minutes of class, or thunder has been heard with thirty minutes of the class start.
- If students are on the water during a lightning strike or thunder, students will be immediately instructed to sail back to shore and a 30 minute clock will start from the last sighting of lightning or thunder heard. If the storm produces enough wind to capsize a sailboat, students will be instructed to take down the sails on their boats and be towed in by the safety boat.
- If at any point a boat needs to be left anchored on the water to avoid injuries, the instructors will do so and shuttle students back to the shore to find coverage from the storm.
- Unless the lightning is stated to be within 30 miles or is visible, instructors will run the class as usual.
- In the event that storm clouds develop closer the policy is still to return as quickly and safely to shore to take down boats.
